3 A.M. – Feb 18

February 18th, 2009 — 7:41pm

Poem to Be Read at 3 A.M.

Excepting the diner
On the outskirts
The town off Ladora
At 3 A.M.
Was dark but
For my headlights
And up in
One second-story room
A single light
Where someone
Was sick or
Perhaps reading
As I drove past
At seventy
Not thinking
This poem
Is for whoever
Had the light on.

Cough – Feb 17

February 17th, 2009 — 8:57pm

But to be liked, you must never disagree. And if you never disagree, it’s like only breathing in and never breathing out! A man can suffocate on courtesy.

Le Petit Prince – Feb 16

February 16th, 2009 — 10:43pm

Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.

Unconscious Love – Feb 15

February 15th, 2009 — 4:58pm

We love without knowing it. A man—or a woman—can’t love on schedule. I don’t wake up in the morning and say: “I shall start loving at nine-twenty, and continue until ten-fifteen.” Yes, it is accidental. And it’s everywhere—it’s the wind, the tide, the waves, the sunshine.

Just Thinking – Feb 13

February 13th, 2009 — 5:01pm

Just Thinking

Got up on a cool morning. Leaned out a window.
No cloud, no wind. Air that flowers held
for awhile. Some dove somewhere.

Been on probation most of my life. And
the rest of my life been condemned. So these moments
count for a lot–peace, you know.

Let the bucket of memory down into the well,
bring it up. Cool, cool minutes. No one
stirring, no plans. Just being there.

This is what the whole thing is about.

Animals – Feb 12

February 12th, 2009 — 10:52pm

Animals

Have you forgotten what we were like then
when we were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth

it’s no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
and turned some sharp corners

the whole pasture looked like our meal
we didn’t need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water

I wouldn’t want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days

Gone From my Sight – Feb 11

February 11th, 2009 — 3:45pm

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, “There, she is gone”

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me — not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”

And that is dying…

Death comes in its own time, in its own way.
Death is as unique as the individual experiencing it.

Just To Say – Feb 10

February 10th, 2009 — 7:12pm

This Is Just To Say
(for William Carlos Williams)

I have just
asked you to
get out of my
apartment

even though
you never
thought
I would

Forgive me
you were
driving
me insane

The Orange – Feb 9

February 9th, 2009 — 8:30am

The Orange

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all my jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.
